Bypass Transition, Receptivity and Transient Growth
Although there exists a considerable wealth of knowledge concerning transition to turbulence in "idealized" flows, transition in true conditions (rough surfaces, flows with high free-stream turbulence, noisy flows, iced surfaces etc.) is far from well-understood. The implications of this work are of great importance and directly affect the design of turbomachinery, high-lift systems and high-performance vehicles. I have been active in this area both theoretically and experimentally. Our work includes:
- measurements of acoustic receptivity to two- and three-dimensional
- roughness elements
- Identification of key processes in nonlinear wavepacket evolution and breakdown
- Calculations of transient growth and bypass mechanisms in 2- and
- 3-D boundary layers and pipe flows
